Having just spent a couple nights in Salt Lake City for a Board Meeting, I can affirm that some very cool things were learned. Just probably not what you think!!!
There I was stuck between meetings with a three-hour window and nothing to do except trudge down and go to the incredibly well-equipped workout room. So, I reluctantly changed and headed down the elevator – (yes, you read that right) and entered the club facility. I did a reluctant mile on the treadmill and then went to do some leg day lifts.
There in the weight room was a visibly energized older guy who was doing bench presses with free weights with his legs elevated and feet crossed. This was an impressive exercise as his calves were perfectly parallel to the bench and his ankles crossed and virtually motionless. I was impressed and went about my platform press and even threw the weights up a notch. Then he did some curls and returned to the bench and did the same routine again! I go a better look at this man, and he was older than I had originally thought. Then he went over and did some squats with a kettle ball. He was rocking it!
A third set of reps started for him as I began my sit up routine and he repeated the perfect bench press with ankles crossed. My curiosity was on fire. When he finished his reps, I walked over to him and asked him; “I don’t want to make it weird sir, but how old are you?” He laughed a big rolling laugh and said, “I’ll be 90 next month.” Indeed, my new buddy Dave was one month shy of his 90th birthday!!!! We chatted for a minute or so and I asked if I could record his lifts to encourage others and he said it probably wouldn’t be a good idea and he didn’t much like social media. So I asked if I could write a story and he said sure, just don’t give out my last name.
He closed our conversation by letting me know this quote: “Sonny, ‘Father Time’ is in the rear-view mirror …. Let’s keep him there!” We had another big laugh and agreed that that would be the best place for ‘Father Time’! Dave, I’d like top offer some thanks for inspiring me during a workout and beyond. This Grampion is going to work a bit harder than before to keep father time in the rear-view mirror!!!
Let’s get after it!
